Women in Surety

Women in Surety is a sub-group of the Rocky Mountain Surety Association aimed at providing an inclusive and empowering platform for women to enhance both professional and personal skills, find support through networking, and have the opportunity to engage in candid conversations about challenges and successes in the work place. The membership of this group is diverse, with participant work experience ranging from less than one year to 20+ in the industry, and a variety of personal and professional experience inside and outside of surety. Additionally, our members provide perspective from both the agency/broker and carrier side. Throughout the year we will host several events aimed at different development opportunities. Please continuously check the events page within the RMSA website for updates as well as joining our email list. To join, please submit your name and company to any of the Board Members listed below. We look forward to the growth and development of this group and your participation!

Mission: Empowering women to be…One conversation at a time.

Board of Directors

Alex Befus – Co-Founder/Director of Communications
abefus@travelers.com

Hi Everyone! My name is Alex and I am an Account Executive at Travelers Casualty & Surety Company of America. I graduated from the University of Denver in 2013 with a BSBA, Finance and was also a member of the Division 1 Women’s Lacrosse team. Since joining the team in Denver in 2013, I progressed through an underwriting development program to the Account Executive position. I work with various types of industries and size of companies, from small local to Fortune 500, addressing Commercial Surety needs. Differing from many construction underwriters, I look at companies of all industries and monitor economic trends in many spaces my clients may have exposure. In addition to underwriting and relationship management, I am a member of our commercial contract centers of excellence team, a member of our Rocky Mountain Sales Council and a national team leader of our Guiding Principles team. Outside of work I enjoy playing recreational sports (volleyball, Kickball, Spikeball), hiking, camping, backpacking and snowboarding in the winter time. I am obsessed with true crime documentaries on HBO and Netflix, and also enjoy more low-key activities like reading/painting/cooking. I’m excited about the opportunity to develop not only my own confidence and skills in this position but provide a platform for women to do the same. I am very passionate about women taking leadership roles within our industry and am motivated to make this group an avenue for women to do that.

Hanna Munson – Co-Founder/Treasurer
hanna.porterfield@libertymutual.com

Hi I’m Hanna! I’m a contract surety underwriter at Liberty Mutual and one of the original founders of Women In Surety. I started in surety in 2016 right after graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Finance and Accounting. When I’m not working I love to be outside, spend time with animals, do art, and try to keep my many plants alive. I started the Women in Surety organization because I saw the many benefits that would come from a group where women in the industry can network, learn from each other, and grow in their careers with the support of their colleagues. I love connecting with people and I believe it is those connections that not only make the biggest impact on your career, but also on your life.

Andi Black – Director of Education/Business Affairs
ablack@tmhcc.com

Hi, I’m Andi. I have been working for Tokio Marine HCC Surety since 2016 as a contract bond underwriter. Like many surety professionals, I carry a non-insurance related background. I studied Environmental Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Out of college, I worked in the oil and gas industry as a HAZMAT crew supervisor and followed that with being a high school science teacher. Now happily and safely in the surety industry, I love getting involved in groups like the Women in Surety. Seeing successful women in a male-dominated field is awe-inspiring and motivates me to work harder and hopefully, become one of them. When I’m not in the office, you can find me rollerblading, playing/coaching lacrosse, or exploring the outdoors with my giant dog, Milo. With my background in education, the WinS saw fit to endorse me as Director of Education and Business Affairs. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions and I will gladly include any ideas in our future discussions. I’m very excited and passionate about this group and I can’t wait to see where we take it.

Kimberly McAlexander – Director of Philanthropy
KimberlyMcAlexanderDrobney@westfieldgrp.com

Hello, I am a Senior Surety Account Manager at Westfield and have worked here for 13 years. I have 29 years of experience in the surety industry on the company/underwriting side as well as the agency side of the business. I have handled contractors ranging from small start-ups using the SBA program to contractors with large active surety programs. I served on several chairs of the Rocky Mountain Surety Association and as President in 2011. I enjoy working with the Women of Surety in collaboration with other members bringing thoughtful ideas to our industry. From a personal perspective, I have always enjoyed running track/cross country starting in junior high, then high school, and at CU. This love of running continued into my adult life climaxing by running R2R2R of the Grand Canyon. Having lived in Colorado for over 50 years now, I enjoy our great state and being outdoors spending quality time in nature whenever I can. I enjoy running, hiking, biking, golfing, paddle boarding and other outdoorsy activities. I also love traveling with family, friends and spending time with my 5 adult children.

Hi, my name is Jaqueline Luevano and I am a commercial surety Account Underwriter for Travelers. I began my underwriting career as intern in contract surety. After two years as an intern, I landed in my current position which I have been a part of for two years now. I graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. I joined the Women of Surety group in 2018 with the hopes of meeting other business women within the industry. Since joining the group, I have participated in a variety of events which have assisted me in underwriting role at Travelers. In July of 2019, I accepted a role as one of the board members for the Women of Surety as the Director of Outreach. My goal is to empower women by creating a successful networking group.

Kelsey Spaniol – Director of events
kspaniol@tmhcc.com

Hi all, I’m Kelsey Spaniol! I specialize in both commercial and contract bond underwriting at Tokio Marine HCC Surety. My background in surety began with an internship at Holmes Murphy & Associates during the summer of 2016. After graduating from the University of Iowa with degrees in International Studies and Spanish, I decided to pursue my dream of living near the mountains. When I first moved to Colorado, I was working as a recruiter in the construction industry. However, I quickly found out that it wasn’t the career for me and thankfully found my way back into surety! When I’m not underwriting, you will find me snowboarding, hiking, or grooving to live music. I am passionate about the Women in Surety organization because it has built a network of empowering women in a male-dominated field. As Director of Events, I am excited to plan more of these opportunities to network and share our stories. If you have any ideas or questions about upcoming events please do not hesitate to reach out to me at kspaniol@tmhcc.com!
